How It All Began

I started scrapbooking in 2002.  Our first child had just turned one.  A friend invited me to a Stampin’ Up home party, and I looked at her like she was nuts. She persisted, and lured me to the party, promising me there would be wine!  I ended up going, having a great time with some other ladies, and I went home with a letter stamp set, and 3 ink pads… christmas red and green, and trusty black.  I had a plan.  I was going to ONLY scrapbook holidays, birthdays, and special events.  Shortly after the party, I was invited to join a weekend crop.  I could not believe that people would actually do this type of stuff ALL weekend.  I showed up, carrying ALL my scrapbooking belongings in a laundry basket!  The ladies there were quick to steer me in the right direction when they saw me with my UHU glue stick and crinkly edged scissors.

This is the very first page I ever created. Yep… made with the stamp set from the Stampin’ Up Party (That for the life of me I could not get lined up, so I just did them on individual pumpkins!!!), with black ink I bought (That I felt wasn’t dark enough, so I “touched it up” with a Sharpie), matted on cardstock that was indeed cut with my crinkly scissors, and yes… glued down with UHU glue stick.

Things evolved from there, and I soon found I was making albums for each of our 3 kids, special albums for family trips, albums as gifts… well, you get the idea.  It even got to the point that I would take certain photos with a scrapbook layout in mind, and my kids would say after I took a photo “Mom… is this picture gonna be for your (insert ANY event/non-event under the sun) page???”.  I was hooked.  I look back on my first layouts, and shudder.  It takes all I have to not fix them.  But I don’t.  It certainly is a trail of where I started to where I am now, and I wouldn’t change a thing in that journey!  Some of my favourite memories are from scrapbooking weekend retreats with ladies who went from being strangers to some of my dearest friends.

Fast forward 18 years.  My sister and I were traveling in southern Manitoba, and we went into a beautiful little scrapbook store.  I loved the vibe of the store, and said to my sister, “Wow.  Could you imagine?  THIS.  This is your job.  Everyday, coming into an environment like this, being surrounded by pretty things, and happy people.”  She said to me, “Well…. Whyyyyyyyyyy can’t it be?”  It was the kick in the pants I needed.  She was right.  Why can’t it be my reality?  From that moment, I knew it was just what I had to do, and I got the ball rolling on becoming a business owner.  I am so very grateful for my husband, family, and friends who have supported me along the way (and still very much are!), and to those already in the business world, whom I admire and look to for guidance.  I was a teacher for 25 years, so leaving the career I knew and loved behind was certainly not a decision I took lightly.  However, I am so excited and energized with this new path in my life.  I have so many ideas bubbling in my head… I just need to remind myself… One step at a time!
